Symbolic Graves of Executed Kuringen First World War

Three forgotten heroes were buried in the old cemetery of Kuringen at the church. These three had been shot in cold blood by the Germans during the First World War.
It concerns CLAES Pierre, MERTENS Paul Louis and TASSET Jaak, executed for espionage. They were buried after their execution on 12 October 1915, 25 January 1916 and 14 July 1916 respectively. The three graves were exhumed in 1919 to repatriate the remains to their place of birth.
As part of the Hassselt - Kuringen 14-18 project, a grave monument was placed in the cemetery at the Sint-Gertrudiskerk.
The grave monument is an exact representation of the construction that the inhabitants of Kuringen had already placed on the graves of the executed during the war years.
