French War Graves Eupen

The Eupen cemetery contains a field of honor with German war graves.

Three French soldiers are also buried among these German war graves. They are;

DELRURE Jules, soldier, drummer with the 128th infantry regiment, died in the hospital in Eupen on December 14th, 1918.

GILLET Jaqcues, soldier with the 8th escadron du Train des equipages, died in the hospital of Eupen on December 19th, 1918.

TERRIEN Georges, soldier with the 74th infantry regiment, died in the hospital of Eupen on September 19th, 1914.

Eupen was far from the front. The three soldiers suffered injuries on the battlefield that caused them to be evacuated from the battlefield by the Germans and eventually transported to the hospital in Eupen. There, German soldiers were also treated. Since this hospital was located far from the front, it can be assumed that the heavily wounded were treated there. The lighter wounded were treated in field hospitals near the front so that they could be deployed again quickly.

Why these three soldiers were not transferred to France after the war is unknown. What is strange, of course, is that they were buried among the German soldiers with the same stone, nor were they buried in a separate part of the cemetery.

Photo 4 shows that in addition to TERRIEN Georges, German soldiers SCHMITZ Anton and CLAUSEN Peter are buried.
