Stumbling Stone Huijghenslaan 63

This brass plaque (Stolperstein or Stumbling Stone), laid on 26-09-2024, commemorates:

Justinus (Joost) Cornelis de Josseling de Jong (born 1920, murdered 8-3-1944 Natzweiler)

This Stolperstein is here for a member of the Resistance. Joost de Josselin de Jong, a trainee Marechaussee, refused to attend the Nazi-oriented police training in Schalkhaar and was dismissed. He becomes active in the resistance group ‘Erkens’ until it is rounded up in group in November 1942. Joost is also arrested and, after a trial before the Feldgericht, deported as a ‘Nacht und Nebel’ prisoner to the Natzweiler concentration camp on 27 October 1943 via Kamp Amersfoort. There, he was murdered by a Kapo on 8 March 1944.

‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig commemorating victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (trip stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of a residence of (mostly Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque bears the victim's name, date of birth and their fate. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: ‘A person is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.’
