Mural Sint-Niklaas

Following the Peace Festivities and the liberation 80 years ago, a mural was unveiled on September 5, 2024, in the presence of the family, on the side wall of a house in Knaptandstraat, one of the historic approach roads along which Sint-Niklaas was liberated.
The renowned artist Smates (Bart Smeets) started working with a historical archive photo that was taken in 1945.

The mural shows the love story of St. Nicholas Danielle Hanssens and the Polish soldier Eugeniusz Olszewski They met when Polish troops entered the city to drive out the last Germans.
On August 28, 1945, Daniëlle and Eugeniusz were among the first to marry after the liberation. Three years later the couple moved to Salisbury in Great Britain.
