Military Hospital Laugarnes

The hospital at Laugarnes, Reykjavik was built in 1898 as a Leper Hospital. Following the occupation of Iceland on 10th May 1940 by the British they established a Military Hospital in the building and built a Nissen Hut camp surrounding it. Known as 50 General Hospital, it was operational from June 1940 to March 1942 when it was handed over to the American Occupying Forces.
On 7 April 1943, whilst still under Allied occupation, the building burnt down, however the Nissen huts continued to be used throughout the war. After the war the huts were used as housing for Reykjavik residents, the last one being demolished in 1980
