This small brass memorial plaque (Stolperstein or tripstone), placed in October 2024, commemorates:

HENDRIK POORTMAN, (born 1901, resistance fighter, 10-1-1945 arrested 16-1-1945, deported from Groningen, murdered 10-4-1945 Neuengamme)

This Stolperstein is here for a resistance fighter, deported and murdered in World War II.

Hendrik Poortman was born in the city of Groningen in 1901 and died in the Neuengamme concentration camp in April 1945. During the war, he was a member of resistance group ‘De Groot’ A pacifist resistance group with many modern, principled people.





This Stolperstein is here for a Jewish war victim, procecuted, deported and murdered in World War II.

"Stolpersteine” is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of a residence of (usually Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque is provided with the name of the victim, date of birth and the fate of these people. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: “A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.”
