The Night Watch in Radboud Castle
Due to the threat of war, the Netherlands took measures in 1939 to protect art, including moving art treasures from the Rijksmuseum to other locations.
On 4 September 1939, Rembrandt's Night Watch was transported to Medemblik with other paintings and stored in the Knight's Hall of Radboud Castle. When war broke out in May 1940, a concrete shelter in the dunes near Castricum had been completed and the Night Watch was moved from Medemblik to this new shelter.
