Memorial Auxiliary Fire Service

"In Freedoms cause
sacred to the memory of
five gallant members of the
Beckenham Auxiliary Fire Service
killed by enemy action whilst on duty
19 March 1941

L.J. Palmer
S. Short.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them"

These 5 Auxiliary Firefighters were attached to the Coney Hall Auxiliary Fire Station and on 19 march 1941, whilst travelling as part of a convoy in a pump engine to a fire in Silvertown they were obliterated by a parachute mine. All five are buried in a communal grave in St John the Baptist Churchyard.
