On the night of 6-7 October 1944, there was panic and chaos at the dyke in Beneden- and Boven-Leeuwen. German soldiers, sneaking across the Waal in boats, quickly set fire to 43 houses. The blaze, which was fanned by a strong easterly wind, stretched over a distance of 2.5 kilometres: from the Oosterpas to the Tesstraat. The dike residents fled in panic and had to leave everything behind. Pastor Zijlmans wrote: ‘The suffering suffered on this night, Leeuwen will never forget.Source: https://www.museumtweestromenland.nl/2024/09/17/dijkbrand-totale-paniek
