Military Cemetery Saulieu

During the Battle of Saulieu on June 16, 1940, a fierce battle that lasted nine hours, 37 French soldiers were killed and 11 civilians were killed.
On that day, the hospital, the elderly pavilion and the maternity ward were bombed. The Germans fired with automatic weapons which resulted in many deaths.
The French soldiers who surrendered were locked up in Saint-Saturnin and in the cemetery for three days and two nights without food or water. Thanks to the courage of some personalities of that time, the population was not left to fend for itself and Saulieu escaped looting and fire.

The military cemetery, dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Second World War, joins the Saint-Saturnin civil cemetery around the church.
