Survivor of Auschwitz

Zisel Dum was born in Mukacevo, Ukraine on 11 March 1924. She survived imprisonment in Auschwitz and a death march towards the Baltic. She and her sister Malchi managed to escape and make their way back to Mukacevo. In 1942 her family had numbered 32, but by 1945 only 8 remained. She escaped to Palestine where she joined the Palmach, part of the Hagenah resistance group where she was shot and wounded. She changed her name to Naomi in 1948 and joined the Women's section of the Israeli Defense Force. In 1952 she married a German refugee Asher Blake and moved to Britain and studied art. Her work reflected her experience as a Holocaust survivor. She died on 7 November 2018, aged 94.
