The training ship for the Bristol
& Severn Divisions of the Royal
Navy & Volunteer Reserves lay
at this berth for fifty years.
This memorial is in honour of all who served
or trained in her during peacetime & in war &
of those who gave their lives in the service of
their country as 'a security for such as pass
on the seas upon their lawful occasions"

HMS Flying Fox was one of 22 of the '24' class of mine sweeping sloops built in APRIL 1918. After the reduction in the size of the Royal Navy post WW1, Flying Fox arrived in Bristol in 1921 and was converted to be the headquarters of Bristol Division, Royal Navy Volunteer Reserve. During WW2 she became a school for mine clearance training but from 1923-1973 she carried out the role of HQ before being scrapped in 1973.
