French War Memorial Domburg

This is the first monument placed in this cemetery in Domburg for the died French and Moroccan soldiers in May 1940.
In May 1940 the French and North African troops fought in southern Netherlands.
Through Vlissingen they wanted to escape for the German forces.
The victims who died during this escape, have been buried in Domburg.
Despite the German opposition, there was finally a simple monument erected for these victims. During the war, there was little publicity for this monument.

After 1945 the buried soldiers were moved to the French military cemetery in Kapelle, but the monument is in Domburg was maintained.
On november 1st, the casualties will be commemorated.

The text on the monument reads:
A nos vaillants defenseurs français.
témoignage de reconnaissance.
Mai 1940
