Spitbank (or Spitsand) Fort was one of 4 sea forts built under Lord Palmerston to defend Portsmouth from possible French attack . Built between 1861-1878 it was in service until 1956 when coastal artillery was abolished. Spitbank was the smallest of the 4 forts but was still armoured plated (on the seaward side) and with 6 feet thick concrete walls. It is 49.4 meters in diameter at its base.
The fort is now privately owned and for a time was a restaurant and hotel.
