Peace Tree Lendelede

There is a peace tree next to some information panels on the village square of Lendelede.

"Peace tree
This peace tree was planted in 2018 as a memorial to
the end of the First World War on November 11, 1918.
Let us never forget yesterday's victims. And leave
Today and tomorrow we work together more than ever for the
peace, freedom and human rights."

There are two information boards for the French pilot Roland Garros. He was shot down above Lendelede on Sunday April 18, 1915 and made an emergency landing in Hulste.
He survived the crash but was captured by the Germans and housed in café de "Drie Koningen", the local "kommandantur" in Lendelede. The wreckage of his plane was exhibited on a farm wagon on the market in Izegem on April 19, 1915.

"Who was Roland Garros (1888-1918)
He was a French aviation pioneer and became world famous in 1913 for being the first flying non-stop across the Mediterranean from France to Tunisia. As a pilot he scored three in the First World War - with a secret weapon - in April 1915 victories over West Flanders.
In tribute, his name was given to the French Open Tennis Championships."
