Belgian War Graves Dison

The Dison municipal cemetery contains several Belgian war graves. Central among the graves is the monument to the fallen of World War II.

DEJOSÉ Albert, age 22, soldier with the 3rd Artillery Regiment, killed in action at Mons on May 15, 1940.

MERTENS Hubert, age 21, soldier with the Regiment Fortifiée de Liège of Fort Battice, wounded at bunker MN29 at Charneux on May 11, 1940, and died a day later of his wounds. Initially buried next to the bunker.

Also buried among the fallen soldiers are members of the resistance from the Armée Secret, among others, who died during acts of war. Such as:

CLEEREN Roger, age 19 !, shot at Banneux on Sept. 6, 1944. At Banneux he is commemorated on a separate monument at the site where he was shot.

Also buried there are

BERGENHOUSE Mathieu, age 42, served as a Belgian in the British Army, killed at Enfield (London) on August 18, 1944.

CHRISTIAEN Victor, prisoner of war, died at Leuven on May 16, 1944, no further details known.

CLAESSENS Franz, age 25, soldier in the 25th line regiment, killed at Bavikhove on May 24, 1940.

CRUTZEN Joseph, age 36, soldier, killed in Ixelles on January 22, 1945.

DECHENE Emile, age 47, died on October 23, 1946 from the consequences of captivity in Germany.

DUYSENS René, died in Antwerp on May 21, 1945, no further details known.

EHX Pierre, probably commando, died in Bruges on July 1, 1945.

GIERCKENS Mathieu, age 36, resistance member, died May 10, 1944 at Morhet.

GOBLET Hubert-Luciën, age 20, soldier with the genius, killed at Ursel on May 27, 1940.

GRIGNARD Jean, prisoner of war, died at Dison on June 28, 1945.

HENRARD Prosper, prisoner of war, died at Dison on July 9, 1945.

JOSE Guillaume, age 26, soldier with the 5th artillery regiment killed at Oostrozebeke on May 26, 1940.

LACROSSSE Jean, age 51, resistance member, secret press, executed in the Citadel of Liège on April 21, 1943.

LARGEFEUILLE Dieudonné, age 24, soldier in the Ammunition Transport Corps with the 7th Army Cops, killed at Bassenge on May 11, 1940.

LEJEUNE René, age 31, soldier, killed on April 6, 1945 at Elverdissen (D).

LIBERT Jean, age 32, killed in action at Hallendorf (D) on August 13, 1944.

MARECHAL Armand, age 26, brigadier at Battice fort, died in a transport at Bispebjerg (Denmark) on April 11, 1945.

NIVARD Jean, age 33, soldier with the 31st line regiment, killed at Passchendaele on May 27, 1940.

NOEL Barthelemi, political prisoner, died at Sondbostel (D) in February 1945. Sondbostel was an outer camp of Neuengamme concentration camp.

SCHOONBRODT Charles, age 23, soldier of the 4th lanciers regiment, killed in action at Zwijndrecht (NL) on May 19, 1940.

SUSANNE Camille, age 45, political prisoner, veteran from 14-18, died in captivity at Hamburg (D) on November 29, 1944.

SUSANNE Charles, age 19 !, soldier with the Regiment Fortifiée de Liège at Fort Battice, killed at Battice on May 21, 1940.

VEESCHEKENS Jean, resistance member, executed in the Citadel of Liège on August 22, 1943.

VIELLEVOYE Mathieu, age 21, soldier with the 5th regiment of cyclists, killed on June 13, 1940 at Anglure (F).

WAROLUS Freddy, age 18 !, soldier with the Regiment Fortifiée de Liège of Fort Battice, killed in action at Battice on May 21, 1940.

WINTGENS Jean, age 31, soldier with the 31st linieregiment, killed in action at Neubrandenburg (D) on March 15, 1941.
