In 1930 St Mary's church offered its Lady Chapel for use as the regimental chapel of the Green Howards that had been using the St Mary's as its garrison church for more than a century. The chapel was dedicated on 13 March 1932 and contains many of the regiments ensigns and plaques to those that served in the many conflicts of the 20th century.
The regiment, officially known as Alexandra, Princess of Wale's Own Yorkshire Regiment, was nicknamed the 'Green Howards' after its commanding officer in 1744. There was another regiment commanded by a Colonel Howard so reference was made to the different colours of their cuffs and facings and this regiment became the 'Buff Howards'
