Memorial Flying Aces Bapaume

This memorial commemorates three flying aces who died in World War I. German Oswald Boelcke died near Bapaume on October 28, 1916, after a mid-air collision with another aircraft. Frenchman Georges Guynemer flew a mission over Bapaume on September 25, 1916, and was killed in an air battle over Poelcapelle on September 11, 1917. The Briton Lanoe Hawker was killed on November 23, 1916, south of Bapaume during an air battle with the German ace Manfred von Richthofen, 'the Red Baron'.
