Informationsign and Grave Cross Archibal Ronald Richardson

This sign and wooden grave cross suggest that Archibald Ronald Richardson is buried here. However, this cross was placed here by relatives to commemorate the fact that he crashed and went missing in this area on 24 August 1944.

He had taken off that day in his Grumman Hellcat from the aircraft carrier H.M.S. Indefatigable for an attack on the German battleship the Tirpitz. It was long thought that he had crashed into the sea after being hit by anti-aircraft fire, but in 2018 remnants of an aircraft that was probably his were found in the mountains.

Officially, he is listed as missing. However, the cemetery in nearby Tromsø has a grave where an unknown New Zealand pilot is buried and this could possibly be his grave. Other reports incidentally said that the wreck had already been found in 2007.
