Bom Crater Tallboy Alta I

This metre-deep bomb crater is a remnant of the November 1944 attacks by RAF heavy Lancaster bombers on the German battleship the Tirpitz. The Tirpitz had been attacked by other types of aircraft in the months before but eventually the 5,000-kilo Tallboy bombs did the job. The Tirpitz sank in the Tromsøfjord after three hits on 12 November 1944.

A total of 29 Tallboy bombs were dropped in the attack. As this was done from a high altitude, this will have caused the bomb that caused this crater to miss its target by a wide margin.

Remnants of the bomb can still be found in the crater.
