There is a memorial plaque at the entrance of the St. Amélie church:
"Community
Dun-les-Places
Tribute to our martyrs
Reminder of
June 26, 1944"
Dun-les-Places is the martyr village in Burgundy that was hardest hit during the Second World War.
From June 26 to 28, 1944, the village was occupied by approximately 3,000 German soldiers. They massacred part of the population before looting and burning a number of houses. This German attack killed 27 people.
The massacre in Dun-les-Places was the result of a terrorist operation by the German occupiers against the population of the small village. The aim was to destabilize the numerous maquis in the region.
