The Ingelmunster cemetery contains several war graves of resistance fighters from the Second World War.
Robert BULTYNCK joined the armed resistance in March 1941, under the direct command of Victor Schotte. He worked for the secret press and distributed pamphlets and writings. He also tried to help the people around him as best he could. On February 24, 1944, the Gestapo raided his home. He was arrested and taken to Gross-Rosen. He was shot dead on February 8, 1945, just before the Russians were to liberate the camp.
During the war, Victor SCHOTTE was platoon leader for Ingelmunster in the resistance movement 'Death Brigade'. In February 1944, the 'black police' invaded his home for inspection where the brigade was meeting. Shortly afterwards, on February 18, Victor Schotte was arrested and taken away. He died on December 13, 1944 in the Gross-Rosen camp.
Remi RICART joined the armed resistance on November 15, 1941.
On September 4, 1944 he was at the canal together with another resistance fighter. He returned from resistance fighters in Ooigem with information in his pockets.
At the canal there was a confrontation between a patrol of resistance fighters and some German soldiers. Remi Ricart was cycling past at that moment and ended up in the commotion.
Because he had information that it was better not to end up in the hands of the occupying forces, he did not respond to the order to stop and fled. He was then fired upon by the Germans.
