Crash Site Avro Lancaster I R5572 ZN-M

On the site of this memorial, the Avro Lancaster of RAF 106 Squadron with home base Syerston crashed on the night of 25-26 June at 0.115 hours. The aircraft had been fatally attacked during a mission to Gelsenkirchen by Oberleutnant Werner Husemann's Bf 110 G-4 G9-EA night fighter of Stab/NJG 1.

Only the pilot Sgt E.W. Davidson survived the crash. He was taken prisoner of war. The remaining six crew members died and are buried in Steenderen.
