Stumbling Stones Antoniuslaan 39

These brass memorial plaques (Stolpersteine or stumbling stones) commemorate:
OTTO GRÜNTHAL (born 1882, arrested and executed 1 November 1944, Hout-Blerick)
WALTER ROSENTAL (born 1922, arrested and executed 1 November 1944, Hout-Blerick)

Otto was an engineer by profession. He would not join the Venlo Jewish religious community, but rather kept aloof with his wife. He bought into the Blerick company Kurstjens, which made agricultural implements. Walter and his wife were baptized Catholics. Both families, despite their distance from the religious community, were not spared anti-Jewish measures. After escaping the "dance" several times, Otto and Walter were finally arrested and interrogated by the SD on November 1, 1944. The SD had a temporary office in Villapark in Venlo. They were executed that same day in Hout-Blerick. Their last known residence address was on Antoniuslaan.

Although there is no memorial at the execution site, both men now receive a tripstone with their names on it. Gently we pronounce it. Then they will not be forgotten.

These Stolpersteine lie here for Jewish war victims, persecuted, deported and/or murdered in World War II.

"Stolpersteine" is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of a residence of (usually Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque is provided with the name of the victim, date of birth and the fate of these people. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: "A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."
