Belgian War Graves Boussu-en-Fagne

The Boussu-en-Fagne cemetery contains two war graves from the Second World War.

Alphonse Thomas was mayor of the municipality. He was captured and died as a prisoner of war in the Neuengamme camp.

Count Claude Hennequin de Villermont, born in Brussels in 1923, fell on the field of honor in Bure on December 31, 1944.
He was a soldier in the Belgian 5th SAS Parachute Squadron and active as a driver-gunner in Lieutenant Renkin's team. Their job was to operate behind enemy lines for intelligence and sabotage missions. In October 1944, the Belgian 5th SAS was transformed into an exploration unit with armed jeeps.
On December 28, they were sent to the Ardennes and, under the command of the British 6th Airborne Division, established themselves at Froidfontaine, on the south side of 'The Bulge'.
On the fateful December 31, 1944, Lt. Renkin set out with 4 jeeps in the direction of Bure. After a first assignment in the morning, they left again in the same direction in the afternoon. At one point they noticed German soldiers retreating into the woods. They proceeded slowly under cover of the other jeeps but were fired upon. Lt. Renkin's jeep turned around but was hit by a shell in the reserve fuel tank. The vehicle exploded and the three occupants, including soldier Hennequin, were killed. The 'Croix Renkin', a memorial to the three soldiers who died, has stood at the site of this battle for many years.
