This is bunker CS 13 bis of the 1st defense line of defence fot the city of Liège, La Position Fortifiée de Liège, PFL 1.
It is the 14th of a total of 30 bunkers in this sector, Comblain-Sougné. Because bunker CS-A is located between CS 2 and CS 3 and bunker CS 11 was never built, it is the 14th bunker in this sector.
The bunker is located in a meadow in the floodplain of the Amblève River. The door of the bunker is closed with bricks. The artillery opening, although still open, is difficult to see due to dense vegetation.
One of the four plotposts is still present. Post 'DN 3' see photo 5. DN means 'Defense National' post 3. Two more are present but they are upside down in the meadow. They probably sunk and fell over the years as the Amblève flooded. The 4 plot posts marked the military plot. A cornerpost of the original barbed wire fence is also still present (photo 1). The barbed wire prevented unauthorized entering of the site. The bunkers were not always manned and thus off-limits to civilians.
The steel shutters in front of the gun opening are gone. Once the bunkers lost their strategic value for the Belgian Army, all the steel was sold. The plots of land on which they stood were also sold. For this reason, they now often lie in backyards or in farmers' pastures and are privately owned.
The walls and ceilings of these bunkers are of 1.30 m reinforced concrete. They could withstand shells of 150 mm.
The bunkers of the PFL were built in the 1930s.
