Hiding Place Nes 118

The basement of this former tobacco firm, owned by the Eekenes couple, was home to people in hiding throughout the war. The people in hiding lived close together, had little distraction and were terrified of discovery. With all types of things becoming increasingly scarce, finding food for those in hiding was becoming a real problem.

From 1943, illegal assault groups began cooperating to raid distribution offices in order to steal food coupons for people in hiding. The coupons were needed to buy food and other items that were scarce. People who went into hiding obviously couldn’t collect their own coupons from the distribution centres. The coupons were distributed across the country, usually by women, who hid them in prams, shopping bags or maternity corsets. Women were seen as innocent by the Germans and were not at risk of being arrested and sent to Germany for forced labour.
