Statue Rembrandt Rembrandtplein

The statue of Rembrandt was erected in 1852. During the war, the Nazis tried to make Rembrandt a national symbol of Germanic culture. Rembrandt’s birthday, 15 July, was to be a new national holiday. There were Rembrandt parties, Rembrandt films and Rembrandt postage stamps. Rembrandt’s ties with Jewish circles in Amsterdam were ignored.
