This memorial commemorates the Slovak General Milan R. Štefánik who was a fighter pilot in the First World War, trained by the French. He was also the one who organized the Czechoslovak Legion of prisoners of war, among others, to fight against the Austro-Hungarians.
After World War I, he was appointed Czechoslovakia's first Minister of War and died on May 4, 1919, when his plane was shot down over Slovakia.
