In Broomfield Community Park there is a memorial that commemorates the crew of the USS Indanapolis, which was torpedoed on July 30, 1945 by a Japanese submarine, the I-58. She sank within 122 minutes.
Of the 1,195, about 300 died immediately, the remaining 890 entered the water and ultimately due to saltwater poisoning, dehydration and shark attacks, only 316 survived.
