Würzburg's main railway station was one of the two stations from which Jews from Lower Franconia were deported during the Nazi period. When plans were made in 2015 to erect a new regional monument to commemorate the deported Jews from Neder-Franken, they initially thought of the main site at the time, the Aumühl-Ladehof. However, this site proved unsuitable.
The monument was completed in 2020. The basic idea for the 25-by-8.50-metre monument is based on a photograph of Aumühle. The main motif is the luggage that people leave behind left and right on their way to the train. The luggage is not only modelled on the real suitcases, rucksacks and scrolls of the time. They could belong to anyone. Four information pillars and three benches invite not only to commemorate and remember, but also to question and feel.
The baggage pieces were made by pupils of participating schools and represent a district or a Jewish community of Neder-Franken. In these districts there are monuments or places with identical baggage pieces.
