During the German occupation a radar station was positioned on this hill, as part of the Atlantic Wall (Stützpunktgruppe Castricum). The 90 meter high transmission tower was of the Elefant type. Ahead was a smaller tower that served as the receiver. The large tower was called the 'Grosse Elefant', the smaller tower the 'Kleine Elefant'. The range of the station was 300 km, so that formations of Allied bombers could be signaled in time. Only the concrete foundations of the large tower can still be seen, as well as the access road.
More information about Stützpunktgruppe Castricum can be found in Part 2 of the book 'Castricum en Bakkum tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog', written by John Heideman (2016).
