Portugese War Memorial Ambleteuse

This monument commemorates Portuguese soldiers killed during World War I. The obelisk-shaped monument bears the inscription:

'A Memoria Dos Soldados Portugueses Mortos Na Guerra 1914-1918
Erigado Pela Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa EM 1919
Neste Local Foi Construido Pela Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa Um Hospital De Guerra'

'In memory of the fallen Portuguese soldiers in the war 1914-1918
Established by the Portuguese Red Cross in 1919
A war hospital was built on this site by the Portgusese Red Cross'

In 1916, Portugal chose the Allied side in World War I. In 1917, the first Portuguese troops arrived at the front in Belgium. There they took part in the 4th Battle of Ypres and were relieved and withdrawn to Ambleteuse in spring 1918 after heavy fighting and heavy losses.
