In 1916, Portugal chose the Allied side in World War I. In 1917, the first Portuguese troops arrived at the front in Belgium. There they took part in the 4th Battle of Ypres and were relieved and withdrawn to Ambleteuse in spring 1918 after heavy fighting and heavy losses.
