When the Germans advanced in May 1940, the inhabitants of Vaux-sous-Chrèvremont, a commune of 4,500 inhabitants near Liège, fled to the West where they were eventually taken in by the Poperinge population.
After the war, friendly contacts remained. In Vaux-sous-Chèvremont, there is a rue de Poperinghe and conversely, in Poperinge, there is the rue de Vaux-Sous-Chèvremont.
Today, a plaque at the Poperinge town hall recalls this event of May 1940.
