Unveiled in 1934, this monument commemorates Aveiro-born soldiers who died during World War I. The monument made of granite, sandstone features plaques with the names of the fallen soldiers in addition to a soldier in bronze.
Portugal was initially neutral but decided to join the war on the Allied side in 1916. About 60,000 Portuguese soldiers fought in France and in Africa where the Portuguese and German colonies bordered each other. Portugal lost over 8,000 lives in the ‘Great War’.
