Bunker Outremeuse Pont Atlas

A bunker was built in one of the pillars of the pont Atlas across the Meuse River in Liège. Bunker Outremeuse.

This bunker, within “Le Position Fortifiée de Liège” (PFL-4), was part of the defense of the city of Liège. In this case, therefore, the last circle of defense, PFL 4.

The bridge deck has been renewed but the bunker is still intact. On the south side, two (bricked up) embrasures are visible. On the north side, one of the two embrasures is still visible.

Also visible are two ventilationholes (small square openings) built into the concrete of the bunker in a periscope-shaped line. That way, no grenade could be thrown in through this opening. It would then fall out again because of the tapered shaft.

The metal hatches that sat in front of the gun openings were sold as scrap metal after the war when the bunkers lost their strategic value for the defense of Liège.
