Memorial French Second Lieutenant Joseph Riss and the Allied Pilots

The memorial plaque for Second Lieutenant Joseph RISS is attached to the Memorial of the French soldiers who fought and died in this area during May 1940.
An air battle on 13 May 1940 forced Riss to make an emergency landing at Haut-le-Wastia. He survived the Second World War and continued his career in the French Air Force after the war.
Inscription on the memorial (translation):
“In memory of Second Lieutenant RISS (1916 - 2011) shot down in this area and of the Allied pilots shot down in May 1940
