Memorial Stéphane Binon Couvin

This memorial, 2.48 meters long and 1.99 meters high, is placed at the base of a tree in the center of an open space in front of the Couvin cemetery.

A colored mosaic was applied to a concrete slab. In the center a man is depicted armed with a sword, a shield and a flaming helmet.
Two medallions with Greek crosses occupy the lower corners of the stela.

There is a metal plate at the top:
"In memory of

Doctor of Philosophy and Letters
from the Université Catholique de Louvain
Foreign member of the French School of
Athens (1935–1938)
Byzantine
Reserve officer who died for his country
in Wakken (Leie) on May 26, 1940 "

Stéphane Binon returned to Belgium after his studies in 1938 and was mobilized in 1939. He was appointed commander of the 19th Line 2nd Bat 5th Comp. He was killed on May 26, 1940 during the German capture of Wakken.
