Stumbling Stone Korte Steigerstraat 4

This brass memorial plaque (Stolperstein or stumbling stone), placed on 29-01-2025, commemorates:

* ARIE ELBURG (born 1900, murdered 19-04-1944, Tjimahi/Cimahi).

In May 1940, Arie Elburg and his wife fled to Java via England.
According to Het Bataviaasch Nieuwsblad, Elburg was closely involved in the Jewish youth organization founded in Bandung.
After the Japanese invasion, the Elburg couple were interned. Arie Elburg died in the camp on April 19, 1944 due to exhaustion. He is buried in the Dutch 'field of honour' Leuwigaja/Cimahi.

This Stolperstein lie here for a Jewish war victim, persecuted, deported and murdered in World War II.

"Stolpersteine” is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of the last voluntary residence of (usually Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque is provided with the victim’s, date of birth, and fate. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: “A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.”
