Memorial Limburg Children R.C. Cemetery

    In the spring of 1945, eighteen children from Limburg died after being evacuated to Friesland. They were weakened, malnourished and sick. The children were buried anonymously in the Catholic cemetery in Heerenveen. A memorial was placed in Heerenveen on 3 May 2012. Exactly one year later, on 3 May 2013, an information pillar was also unveiled.

    The monument lists the names and birthplaces of each of the children, combined with a poem - translated from Frisian - by paediatrician Bonne Dijkstra. Below are the names, place of birth and age at the time of their deaths in Friesland, to protect the anonymity of the children:

    • Jacoba Severina Hubertina Maria Langenhuijzen, Maasniel (7 months old)

    • Gertruidis Maria Cornelia Nelissen, Roermond (4 months old)
