Former Mustard Gas Filling Station and Storage Riseley

Despite no mustard gas being used except by the Japanese in China in World War II, the Allies did keep stocks of it. At Coppice Wood, where bombs for a nearby US airbase were also stored, there was a so-called Forward Filling Station with underground containers from which bombs were filled with mustard gas.

Over the years, the containers were removed but remnants of the deadly gas remain on the site, which is cordoned off with warning signs, to this day.
