Along the St. Sixtus walking route, which, how could it be otherwise, runs past the Abbey and through the St. Sixtus forests, new information boards were placed that tell walkers about the World War I experience in the area.
Hermien Vanbeveren, originally from Westvleteren, once wrote a thesis entitled 'Faith under fire, St. Sixtus an abbey and its residents during the First World War'.
The eight information boards were illustrated with texts and photos from that thesis. Hermien got a lot of information from the diary of brother Victor, which he kept during WWI.
The walking route is 7 km long and gained great added value with the placement of these boards.
