In the courtyard of Kuhmo church stands a memorial honoring the heroes of the White soldiers of the 1918 War of Independence. On the memorial are the names and birth and death dates of ten men from Kuhmoniemi parish (from 1937 Kuhmo) who died in Vyborg or Vyborg province in April 1918. Of these fallen men, nine were conscripts and one volunteered for military service. Next to the monument is the hero's grave of these ten young men. A dedication ceremony was held on May 19, 1918, and the monument was erected on October 5, 1925. There was no real fighting in Kuhmo during the War of Independence, but people from Kaunas took part in the fighting, for example with the Kajaani Sissy Regiment. Of the 582 men from Kainuu who took part in the war, 30 came from Kuhmo. The most famous Kainuuan was Urho Kekkonen from Kajaani.
