Headquarters Kuhmo Frontier Troops

The garrison was built between 1934 and 1938. The Kuhmo Frontier Company, or the 2nd Company of the Kainuu Frontier Guard (2./KR), moved to Jämäs on April 15, 1937. In 1939, 69 border guards were registered at the barracks, according to the local register of population. Additionally, there were frontier guards at guard posts near the eastern border. The garrison was used as a training center for Kuhmo during the additional reserve exercises, where the wartime troops were formed. During the Winter War, the area served as a supply center for Finnish troops and was also used as a command post for the Kuhmo sector troops. The troops were initially led by Jaeger Lieutenant Colonel Frans Ilomäki (Group Ilomäki) and his staff, and from the end of January 1940 by Jaeger Colonel Hjalmar Siilasvuo (9th Division) and his staff. The Jämäs garrison included a kitchen, crew quarters, a clothing storage, a laundry room, and a sauna. During the Continuation War, the barracks area was used by the frontier troops and the Finnish Headquarters' long-range patrol units (Detached Battalion 4). Today, the old barracks are privately owned.
