A former American military camp was located on the grounds of the open-air museum between 1942 and 1947. A walking route leads visitors past the remains of the army base and over 30 panels with images explaining the role of Bonaire in the history of the war.
The army base included barracks, staff and sports facilities, as well as a technical area equipped with one of the first radar installations in the Caribbean. In December 1943, the Americans began constructing a new airbase after the existing Subi Blanko airfield had become too small.
When the American troops left in February 1947, the camp at Tanki Maraka was completely dismantled, except for the concrete foundations and blocks.
