Information board at the war memorial in Beaumont concerning the battles of the Sambre at the beginning of the First World War.
“Beaumont, a famous mediaeval town, has always been on the road to France. Whether it be via Coulsore towards the fortified town of Maubeuge, via Erquelinnes and Jeumont or via the principality of Chimay, every route passes through this hub. The French army was no exception as it headed towards the banks of the river Sambre.
Here, on 18 August 1914, the 11th Infantry Brigade of the 3rd Army Corps of the 5th Army, under the command of General Lanrezac, marched proudly passed a Belgian population determined not to give in to panic. This was the first time Belgium had been at war since 1830. The 24th and 28th Infantry Regiments were pleased to demonstrate their composure. In the photograph opposite, the 24th Infantry Regiment is marching passed its colonel, on horseback, before their brothers in arm who are paying tribute to them.
The 18th Army Corps, commanded by General de Mas-Latrie, was also to pass through this town and the surrounding villages on its way to Lobbes. Where the battle of Heuleu was to take place on 23 Augusut 1914.
