Stumbling Stones Emile Verhaerenstraat 73

These brass plaques (Stolpersteine or stumbling stones), placed on 30-11-2023, commemorate: * FREDERIC DE JONGH (b. 1897, arrested in Paris in 1943, detained in Fresnes, executed in 1944 in Mont-Valerien)
* ALICE DE JONGH-DECARPENTERIE (b. 1891, arrested in 1943, released from Vorst prison in 1943)
* SUZANNE DE JONGH – WITTEK (b. 1915, arrested in 1942, deported to Ravensbrück and Mauthausen, liberated)
* ANDREE DE JONGH (b. 1916, arrested in 1943, deported to Ravensbrück and Mauthausen, liberated)

These Stolpersteine lie here for resistance fighters, persecuted and murdered in World War II.

"Stolpersteine” is an art project for Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (stumbling stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the sidewalk in front of the last voluntary residence of (usually Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque is provided with the victim’s, date of birth, and fate. By doing this, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He cites the Talmud: “A human being is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten.”
