It was in this area that the Wellington MK X MF517 of the 105 Operational Training Unit crashed on 22 August 1944. The aircraft had come from RAF Bramcote and was returning from a night training flight to St Kilda on the west coast of Scotland. The entire crew consisting of:
Pilot: F/O Kenneth Wilson RCAF (29)
Navigator: Sgt George Firth RAFVR (29)
Wireless Operator/Air Gunner: P/O Stanley Clarson Walker RCAF (31)
was killed in this incident.
The information board at the crash site reads:
‘The died in the service of our country’.
