Stumbling Stone De Dijk 15

This brass plaque (Stolperstein or tripstone), which was laid on 21-01-2023 commemorates:

*ILSE BRÜLL (born 1925, fled 1939 from Vienna, arrested 5-8-1944, interned, deported 31-8-1942 from Westerbork, murdered 3-9-1942 Auschwitz)

This Stolperstein lies here for a Jewish war victim, persecuted, deported and/or murdered in World War II.

‘Stolpersteine’ is an art project in Europe by Gunter Demnig to commemorate victims of National Socialism (Nazism). Stolpersteine (trip stones) are small, 10x10cm brass plaques placed in the pavement in front of a residence of (mostly Jewish) victims of the Nazis. Each plaque bears the victim's name, date of birth and their fate. In this way, Gunter Demnig gives an individual memorial to each victim. One stone, one name, one person. He quotes the Talmud: "A person is forgotten only when his or her name is forgotten."

Ilse Brüll finds shelter in the Eersel nunnery in July 1939. This convent eventually fails to comply with Nazi orders to turn Jews in. Ilse is one of the few “fully Jewish” residents. Unlike most others, she refuses to be baptised Catholic. She does not wish to deny her Jewish faith. On 5 August 1942, Ilse is arrested. Via camp Vught, she ended up in Westerbork. From this transit camp she is deported to Auschwitz on 31 August 1942, where she dies three days later in the gas chambers. She was then 17 years old.

She was the only resident of Eersel to be murdered in a Nazi extermination camp during World War II. Her name is still a symbol of all Jewish deportees in Austria today.
