This monument with the name "The disturbed life", after the title of the diary of Etty Hillesum, shows how the life of the Jews in Deventer took place. The broken stone symbolizes this.
The text on the adjacent column reads:
Etty Hillesum (January 15, 1914–November 30, 1943)
lived from 1924 with her parents and two brothers
in Deventer. Her father was rector of the
Urban Gymnasium.
Before the Second World War nearly 600 Jews lived in Deventer
401 of whom have been murdered in concentration camps
This included the Hillesum family.
Etty Hillesum's letters and diaries are
published, which are a source of inspiration
for a new generation.
This image do not only want commemorate Etty Hillesum
(and in her all other war victims),
but should also serve as a warning signal
against contemporary forms of discrimination and violence.
